sounds high to me. I think I run just over 3000 rpm at 80mph (90-525 5-speed).
I think most cars (even other than bmw) run around 3000 rpm near 80 mph.
I have a 93 525 and at 70 mph it's at just under 4000 rpm. Sound about right? I haven't yet really opened her up and wanted to know of there is a specific rpm that is too high, thanks for anwering my stupid rookie question

seems like your not in OD. @ 80 MPH my wifes 93 525ia is 3100rpm
I'm at 2800rpm at 70mph, 4000rpm is @ 100mph.

at those speeds, with an automatic 525i with m50 motor, your speedometer needle and your tachometer needle should be pretty close to parallel across the plane that is your cluster. either your OD is off or you have problems.
If it is an automatic are you in S3? If so, overdrive won't engage. Try switching to ED and see if that helps. Your RPM's are too high (wasting gas).

My mechanic said something about that switch being broken, I was in M the whole time, I'll have to ask him how to get it into E without the swithch working. The car is being serviced now.
Have you gotten the transmission program fault indicator in the check display portion of the instrument display panel?
