Do a "stomp test", find out what engine light code is being thrown, and go from there.

What kind of car do you have?

they key on position 2, press the accelerator down fully 5 times, quickly. Then watch the check engine light. The code(s) will repeat, so keep that in mind when trying to figure it out.
