No, not without changing the entire wiring loom -- engine, engine bay, and body. That also assumes you can find a way to retrofit the later motronic onto an M20.
Did you buy a GM trans, despite the fact that the car has a ZF?
hi, i have a 90 525i with m20 engine and a automatic, no sport mode, and so it has 189k and the tranny doesnt work. So my question is does a gm tranny work in my car? if so does anyone know what kind or model or info?
thanks very much
justin

i thought it was a gm tranny that was in the car? but idk. is there any other kinds of trans like my other has a getrag but thats a 5 speed manual.... i just was hoping to find a cheap transmission either used or at least common.
thanks again

The M20 engine is mated with a ZF4HP22.

1997 535i V8
5spd, OBC, A/C, cruise, BMW phone, factory M-Tech wheel & suspension, 18" Alpinas
Which are abundant and IMO superior to the GM unit anyway.

how much should i expect for a used zf4hp22 tranny? and what should i be asking when i look at one?
thanks a lot

Can't speculate for price. Best is to see the car it came from and document miles. If the fluid is anything other than the proper color and smell pass on it.
Leaks aren't such a big deal once it's out but are an indication of age or neglect. Drop the pan, any metal or a lot of fuzz on the magnet pass as well.
