Default Central Locking/Windows/sunroof inoperative Tech Bulletin

    MODELS: 5 series (E34), 7 series (E32)

Situation: The above mentioned vehicles are equipped with a General Module which controls a Power Protection Relay (sometimes referred to as an "electronic fuse"). This Power Protection Relay interrupts the flow of current to three ZKE subsystems (power windows, sunroof, central locking, and door lock heating) in the event of excessive current flow, such as a short circuit. The General Module not only monitors the activation of the heating element, but also checks the integrity of the element. An open circuit of the door lock heating element circuit will cause the General Module to open the Power Protection Relay, thereby removing power from the Central Locking and Power Windows, Sunroof circuits.

Correction: If a complaint is encountered of intermittently inoperative Central Locking or Power Windows, Sunroof, proceed with normal troubleshooting using the BMW Service Test and Diagnostic Procedures Manual. Power Protection Relay status must be "on" for the Central Locking and Power Windows, Sunroof to work. If these procedures fail to correct the complaint, verify that the circuit is intact from the General Module (E32: Pin 14 of connector X254; E34: Pin 26 of connector X253), through the Relay Module and Door Lock Heating Element to ground. Total resistance of the circuit should be approximately 992-996 ohms (2-3 ohms for the heating element and approximately 990 ohms through the relay module). If not, refer to the appropriate ETM for troubleshooting.

    Default

I just tested this on a troubled E34.
In addition I found out that the internal electronic fuse works as following according to a tech manual I have for the ZKE in German language:

brief translation (at least I try it):

    electric windows and sunroof:
There are priorities about the sequence, the relay switches off

-in case of >60 seconds >36A are measured, or
-in case of > 0.3 seconds Apmpere between 36 and 60A are recorded )overload), or
-in case of > 0.1 seconds Amprere > 60A flows (short circuit)

In order to protect the TSH/ZV/ZS/FH/SHD system from overload, in addition to the 30A fuse an electronic "fuse" (reversible) has been installed.
Inside GM the ampere at the RM is measured, and depending on the measured rating ((Spannungsabfall (Stromschwelle)) the safety relay interrupts the load (Laststrom).

The switch off values of the 30A fuse will not be reached to the limit (as this would melt then in case of a defect on the electronic fuse).
The reaction limit of the electronic fuse is layed out in such a way, that it always trips before the overload of the connected control automatically trips.
An automatic reset (switch on) floows only after 60 seconds!!!!
However only in such a case, when the related power consumer was switched off respectively there is no short circuit.
An automatic switch on (Wiedereinschalten) can only be done 6 x at switched on (terminal) Kl. 15.

The blockage/freeze is removed by switching off terminal Kl. 15.

In order to avoid that the switch off limit is not reached when several consumers are switched on/used at the same time, only 2 window switches can be used/controlled at the same time. In case more than 2 switches are pushed/activated, only the first activated ones are executed.
In case with 2 window switches activated and the ampere limit is reached or exceeded, one switch will be automatically de-activated. In this case the window switches from the front windows have priority.
