Default Imploded gas tank? e34 540

OK, i was lucky enough to join Scott, JR, Kris, Brandon J at Dave Rs house last weekend in Chicago for the subframe bushing rally and while it was on the rack we all noticed my tank has imploded! Now I ran it dry (gasp) late this summer less than one block from the gas station-- are there any other possibilites for this? Any remedies or am I stuck with a smaller tank now or need to r/r?

Now I know why it only takes 15 gals to fill it up!

First my exploding fuel pump, now a imploding tank!

I have never seen anything like that myself, is there like a dent in the tank or something? I would love to see a picture of that!

So there is a tank vent someplace other than in the gas cap? Most vehicles have pressure and vacuum relief valves in the cap. Are the valves in the top of the tank (fuel pump access hatch?).

I have seen a Citroen diesel with a collapsed tank. There was no pushing the 'dent' out of it manually. It collapsed in a way that stopped the gauge float at 1/2 tank. Not good!

Here was my old tank that the genius's at the tire balancing place put in mine. You can see it was imploded and the support bars didn't even reach the tank. (They didn't have an IQ over 7)
