pretty sure they do wear out and/or get a bit dirty...sudden acceleration while on cruise control is a common symptom...

The 2 fuel tank wires end at the dash cluster.

the diff sensor can crap out with age, it's not a ac pluse generator it's a switch, you can test it with a multimeter set like you are testing a diode -I+ or -<+ is usually the picture for the setting
