Electrical Problem?

G'day All, I recently bought an '83 733i,my wife was driving home one night and lost all power,no headlights or dashlights I drove out there and poked + prodded everything I could see with a torch,no luck.Left car on side of road and went back next day and found the dashlights on when the ignition was turned off,they stayed on when turned ACC +ON butb went out again when I tried to start the car.I made a few calls + was told it was probably the electrical switch at the back of the ignition barrel so I bought a S/hand switch and put that in.The dashlights still stayed on but now they stayed on when the ignition was turned to start but there was still no power going to my startermotor.So I pulled the switch back out + cleaned it + fitted a new locking barrel and key at the same time,I can now start the car but the dashlights still stay on no matter where the ignition is turned to.Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.
