i got a 1990 535i with 135K. the ticking is so horrible. during acceleration it sounds like a lawn mower. idling it sounds like a muscle car. what can be the problem? thanks

You might need to get your valves re-adjusted.

Exhaust manifold leaks will do that too. Check the downtubes for leaks also.

If there aren't any leaks, with the engine running, cover the exhaust tips with the palms of your hands (use a rag, they get hot), and you should be able to stall the engine. If there is a leak, you'll hear a whooshing sound where ever the leak(s) are.

I'll bet it only comes from one spot on the valve cove( use a long handled screw driver and touch the cover and listen throught plastic end)just adjust your valves down to 9thou...I'll bet you have a worn spot on you came somewhere
