    Default Mmmmmm...diesel

I took my beloved 525i to a local dealer for an auto service today. The service tech asked me "would you have use of a courtesy car sir?" To which I replied "You Betcha!"
I drove out in a $100,000 530d with 1100k's on the clock. Unfortunately, I live about 80 kilometres from the dealer. Unfortunate for the dealer, that is.
Everything I've read or been told about how good these things are is true.
Unbelievable grunt and handling. Heaps more room inside than the E34
I won't like giving it back but I and yes I would swap it for the E34. Then I could sell it and by two E34 M5's and an '89 M6.
    Yeah...I know...dream on.

A mate of mine is a Mercedes dealer - and he took me for a couple of fast spins in a new E270 diesel a couple of years ago - quite impressive.

i have driven a 530d desel too. an auto..I was completely surprised by it too.I cant help thinking that it would be kinda boring after a while....when the old M30 gets to 4000 rpm its a completely different feeling car.O would like to try a six speed manual one,i reckon you could really surf that tourque...
I was underwhelmed by the interior tho

I think it was on Top Gear... they raced a diesel 5 series against a 540 I think, equal in almost every category!

Serious diesel grunt from the new models... I would love to have a kickass diesel car anyday!

I have this engine in my ML 270 CDI but it is a first generation, 5 cylinder, common rail direct injection engine and is now about 8-10 years old. Merc has a new 3 litre V6 diesel and then there is the nice straight six in the 530d.

yes even the 530 d is 170 kw vs the 155 of the M30,but it just feels too linear after the initial incredible 1500 rpm hit.
