    Default quick fuel door question

My fuel door locks, open/closes just fine. It just doesn't stay open. If you open it you have to hold it open to keep it from slamming shut. Will a new hinge fix this problem?

Default The door hinge is a

    51 17 1 928 197 and the spring is 51 17 1 969 235. The spring costs another .70 cents.. I'd get the spring too while your at it.

    Default fuel door

I had the same issue with my '94 540i. I just thought it was a standard feature so that you'd never leave the fuel door open while driving. You do not have to purchase anything. While I was replacing the fuel-door hinge that broke, I figured out that the tension clip was on the wrong way, so when i put it all back together, my fuel door stays open now and works properly. I do remember that positioning the clip in the right place was a total pain. -- Mike

Yes, #5 is the tension clip/spring. When I reinstalled everything, I compared it to my mother's '04 X5 to get it right, which is the same as the e34. -- Mike

Thanks for the tips Mike. It was the spring on backwards, got it working like new now. I replaced the hinge at the same time anyways because it was slightly cracked. It's easy to see why someone would put it on backwards. You can't even hardly tell one side from the other.
