Default Identifying tranmission ZF vs GM

    1989 535iA
There are both types (ZF & GM) installed, right? Is there an easy way to identify the type of tranny w/o going under/dropping the tranny? Maybe something in the VIN?

    Thanks

Default No, there's only the zf in yours unless its a japanese one or something

unusual like that with maybe a jatco trans. If its a US e34 535ia its a ZF.

Bill is correct...but you can get some info about your car by using this VIN decoder: http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi

Just type in the last 7 digits of your car's VIN and you'll get some interesting info about it.

I'm assuming here - that vin decoder is for US market cars only?

I put in the last 7 digits for my 535ia, and it tells me it's not a 535 at all, infact it is:
    Chassis number 7028986
    Vehicle code 2791
    Series E21
    Model 316
    Body type saloon
    Catalog model ECE
    Production date 1980 / 03
    Engine M10
    Transmission Manual
    Steering Left
    Catalyzer NONE
