Default BMW TDC marks totally blow

That image was taken with a Canon G5 in MACRO mode with a mirror... thats the only way I could even see into the space where the marks are at. I set the motor at tdc and went down to the oil pan and did this:

I guess BMW didn't really intend the timing to be "checked".

The marks are only there for assembly, the DME checks the timing and you can check the DME.

Another way to check it is at No. 1 piston TDC, you can insert a 1/4" diameter drift under the starter to lock the flywheel.

Need TDC marks to do anything with an ECU - they should make them readable what if an M30 or M20 with distributer has a misfire/distributor lock problem?

No, what blows is seeing the unused crank position sensor boss & thinking it was lost after doing belts & a water pump. The boss is still there on the S52 as well as a friend's (97) 328 motor, m25 maybe?
