    Default License Plate Light

    Hi All,

I have a 1993 525i Touring. The passenger side license plate
light went out. I first replaced the light bulb. no success. I
checked the voltage and there was not 12 volts to the
lamp. As a temporary fix, I wired the 12 volts from the Drivers
side license plate light. I still get a message on the dashboard
that states, "License Plate Light". I removed the Check Control
Module (CCM), there are a ton of resistors in the module. I feel
this could be the problem. Perhaps the resistor blew out and
therefore no power (12V) is getting to the light. Any help
    would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

There must be an open circuit to the bulb holder. Look for corrosion at the connections and check the harness between the hatch and body as these wires break after years of flexing. It is unlikely the check control is at fault.
You stated a check control not an OBC so I'm pretty sure your car has a rear lights check control relay that could also be the culprit.Switching it with another of the same relays from the car is a quick check.

I seem to have this same problem. Both lights will come on when the trunk lid is open. I'm pretty sure its the wires that follow the trunk hinge things. JeffB I have small job for you

The wiring harness to the rear electrical componets such as your wiper, lights, locks, etc. has rubbed itself an open short.

Scott Hersted has replaced his worn wiring harness and has already pinned out the connections for you. It's quite a job, but if you're armed with patience and a solder/shrink wrap set up, you're good to go. Try a search on this site for more information.
