about 20 minutes-30 min. neg so it dont send a surge to all the electronic componants.
In resetting the ECU by disconnecting the battery, how long do I really need to wait? Some say 5 mins, some say 40 mins. And, do I really need to disconnect the negative connector? What if I just disconnect the positive connector? By logic it should be the same, no circuit no current to memory.

Plus, you can disconnect the negative without lifting the back seat out.

Well actually it is easier to disconnect the positive, at least in my car. It is closer to the door. I have to lift the seat anyway.
Why disconnecting a negative would not cause a surge while disconnecting a positive might cause a surge?

uhhh...are you aware that there is a negative battery cable quick-disconnect location where you don't have to lift the seat? The negative battery cable disconnect wire is located under the plastic thingy right in front of the battery on the riser that the rear seat sits on. See attached images below...you remove the outer cover 1st, then the inner protective cover, then the disconnect wire:

I've seen that cover many times on many cars and never thought about it.
I'm embarrassed to admit how many times I've removed the rear seat cushions on old 750s to disc. the battery so it wouldn't go flat while sitting for long periods.
I should have known there was a better way.

Very good to know! Thanks for that tidbit.
