seating an e28 front wheel bearing

Just wondering whether it is really necessary have BMW special tool 31 2 110 to install a front wheel bearing on an e28 or whether i could get around that by heating the bearing in an oven and then tap it on or using some sort of generic puller
i've just been reading the e28 bentley, and by the looks of the ETK the e34 has the same type of front bearing setup. does anyone have any experiences with this?

i just checked bruno's site very helpful no major differences between the e28 and e34 with installing these bearings?
