Default e34 540i exterior fender trim

im replacing the small pcs of trim on both front fenders.
how do you get the clear plastic 'grommets' into the (considerably) smaller holes in the fender w/out destroying them/drilling the holes out just enough...?

Sounds silly I know, but make sure the old gromets are not in there. The correct gromet should pop in with thumb pressure. It is just tight enough to leave a circular mark on your thumb pad. Do they look the same as the old ones?

and you have to pop them in before the trim incase your trying to pop it all in at once.

yes, they are out. it seems as if they are just a little too big... are there different sizes? The stealer gave me a whole bunch of them, and Ive gone thru about 3-4 of them already.
