    Default Interchangable Transmissions?

In my 91 535i I have a 4HP22 but I was wondering if I got a 5HP22 would it bolt in and be the same lengh? What would need to be changed for this to work would it work with just changing parts or would fabing be required?

Well, BMW didn't use a ZF 5hp22, and I don't think such a transmission was ever built. No 5hp is going to bolt to an M30 -- the 4hp-22 was the last auto trans used on the motor, or those with the same bolt pattern. The 5hp-18/24/26 have M60 V8 bellhousings on US applications, the 5hp-19 has the S54 (m50) bolt pattern.

At this point, it's probably best to convert it to a 5 speed, replace the transmission with the correct unit, or ditch the car altogether.

    best, whit
