323 transmission

Hey, a friend of ours bought a 323 a couple months ago, I think it's a 2000 since I don't see they were made in 2001. Anyway, it's got 80,000 miles on it and they said the automatic transmission is shot. What transmission is this? Did these models have early transmission failure problems? I wish I had more detail but I'm getting the information 2nd hand. Anybody got info on this? thanks

Scott, it's a GM A5S360R. Well known for stupid problems, but I've heard about a lot of valve body issues with them. Any more specifics on what's going on with it?

I thought it was the GM but wasn't sure. I wish I had more details. It's a friend of my wife's. I think even if I asked the friend I wouldn't get much more info. She's just "so excited to have a BMW finally". I'm not sure she even knows what year it is. I asked her which 3 series and she wasn't sure so I had to look. Thanks for the reply
