I have a drill press, but I'm quite certain that if I try to do it with a standard steel bit, I'll have one side of the hole very clean and horrible burrs on the other side. Any recommendations?

    Default 1/16" hole

Clamp them tightly together with a steel, aluminum, or wood plate on top & below the stack & drill thru & thru the whole business. The inner layers will all drill cleanly. At worst, only 1 or 2 layers at the top or bottom will have frayed holes, if at all.
