A ball joint tool was used, so no picklefork beating was involved. The aluminum lower ball joints were shot:

The uppers were a completely different story. The PO told me that he had them installed and they were not preloaded. By the time he figured it out, they had already been worn. The car clunked badly when braking:

My mother suffered years of aggrevation from cleaning car parts in the kitchen sink, strange fumes from the basement welder, using the oven to slowly bake glued parts and similar transgressions.
Best to let Jill know now that this is a lifestyle and to just suck it up and get used to it.
