    Default 1991 M5 V Belt Shredding

Hi, my father and i just bought a 1991 M5. We took it for a test drive and couldn't resist. I live in Germany so these things are everywhere, but this one was really an eye turner. We took it out for a drive yesterday, nothing , had it up to about 170, but drove conservitablly. We slowed down when we came inot a city, and suddenly the parking brake light came on, then the temp gauge shot up. We pulled into a parking lot and popped the hood. The collent was bubbling. Then we noticed the fan wasnt running after the car was shut off. We then came to the conclusion the belt had been shreded. The thing were trying to figure our is 1) why did the belt break 2) why did the parking light come on...im not sure wheter anyone has had problems like this before...any assistance would be greatly appericiated as the car has to be inspected in 5 days or its un drivable.!

*sorry for any spelling mistakes, were frantically trying to solve this problem*

Maybe the belt was just old, or dry rotted, cracked. Replace and if there is a problem with alignment or play with the pulleys, it should shred again. I would check the other belts too for any clues to how old or new the main drive belt was.

It happened to me as well. I had just bought my e34 and the first week, I was pushing it a little, and same symptoms; temp gauge shot up, and some lights came up like a christmas tree.
Replace it; it's probably just aged.

My 535i just did the same thing. Found that the hose clamp on my power steering reservoir was leaking onto the alt/v-belt, causing it to break. Replace all the belts, and replaced the hose clamp. So far, so good!

What revs were your turning & for how long ? If the belts were old and not tensioned properley they will fling off when pushed !
