    Default 750il 3.15 LSD available

I was at the local pick your part today. There was a 750il with 3.15 lsd final drive in it. I'd love to have it myself but the input flange is different than on my 535i. Has anyone looked into swapping driveshaft CV joints to use the 750il final drive on a 535i?

My car has a 3.91 open would like to find a 3.46 open or preferably lsd. Anyone have such a beast?

750 is too big, wont fit.

Why would you want to get a shorter gear anyways? Looking for less mpg and performance or something?

Yes, why the heck would you want a 3.15 in a 535 manual?

Like Jeff said....the housing is completely different, especially if it's an E38.

Well, I'd really like to find a 3.46 to go to stock manual setup. I do mostly highway driving when I drive so would like to bring the rpms down and the mpg up. 3.15 is admittedly a little too low. Temporary bit of insanity due to rising fuel prices I suppose.

    Tim,

Are you anywhere near Sacramento, CA? Shipping would be pretty pricey.

Craig, I want to amend the statement I made yesterday about the E32 diff housing. It will fit -- the carrier points are the same -- but the flanges will need to be changed, and there's the potential that the axles won't fit because the unit itself is bigger. The input flange may also be an issue, but as I think you have an adjustable driveshaft, you might be able to get away with it.

No doubt it would be an interesting swap with some of its own issues to ponder. I still think a 3.15 would be a bad compromise with anything that wasn't freeway driving.

    Thanks,

If someone on the board wants the diff for there V8 based e34 let me know.

Based on reading the MPG thread and looking up EPA figures for 89 535i, I may actually be doing pretty good. My OBC tells me 23.3 for ~200 mile trip freeway driving at 65 mph some A/C. EPA is 15/23 for an 89 535i manual. I'll see what the actual mpg is at the next fillup.

Interestingly, I have 3 m30 based 5 series BMW's, they all get between 22 and 25 mpg highway and have vastly different weights, etc.

...and <vastly> improved fuel injection systems, chronologically speaking

23 is about what I get when cruising on the highway.
