    Q. Does BMW know how to make a V-configured engine?

I think the McLaren F1 answered that question.

Sorry abouth the repost. So this has probably also been mentioned before...

As we sit here discussing the problems and quirks of our M20,30,50 & 60 engines, is it even conceivable that any of us will try and tackle the complexity & costs of one these new beasts when it is 10 or 15 years old?

Good point, but this issue isn't confined to BMW by any means. I doubt that high-end cars from any manufacturer are very different from BMW's in overall complexity. All you can hope to expect from any of them is that the parts will be available for long enough to keep them on the road until they're worn out and no longer serviceable. I doubt that any comparable car is going to be as relatively maintainable in 15 years as we're accustomed to. On the plus side, the critical electronics parts so far seem to be working quite well. You rarely hear of a failed motronic, right? It's the stupid crap like window regulators, A/C controls, and hopelessly complicated HVAC valving and ducting systems that cause the most grief.
