Default OT: First systems failures showing up on the '00 Explorer...

...FINALLY...something happened on the Explorer that took longer than 10 minutes to fix (well, not really).

The wife and tot were at the beach last weekend, and had driven my Explorer across town where it was left from Sunday until Tuesday evening. On her way back home Tuesday afternoon, about 2 miles from home, at a stoplight, the ABS light came on. "Great" I thought. It's 2 months from the end of the extended warranty.

Did a little underhood sleuthing first. All fuses okay, wiring harness looked okay, and the connector at the ABS controller looked okay. Checked (visually) the wheel sensors as best I could. Nothing. Did a little internet searching, and found that the rear axle ABS sensor has a tendency to go open (no resistance). Pulled out the old multimeter, and voila, open sensor.

$23.38 including tax at my local Ford dealer and we're back on the road. Took about 45 minutes to diagnose, 30 minutes to and from the dealer, and 5 minutes to remove and replace. Deductible at the dealer would have been $50 and I'd be without the truck for a day at least.

Plus, I got to find out that my rear pinion seal is going. Yippee.

Did I mention I love driving my E30 every day? I rarely get to set foot in the E34 unless I'm working on it...

Default Good info. I've got a '00 Mountaineer.

I've recently taken it over from the wife. Bought her a brand new Pilot, which is the best SUV on the market. I actually really like the Mountaineer since we've had no issues with it and it has better options than the E34. Part prices are OK too.
I've had the E34 8 years now and wondering if its time to .........

    Default Right on.

I hate driving my E34 in the winter. The salt up here in Boston eats it away. Good season for an SUV. Another good reason, pot holes.

I just sent my 91 explorer off to the junkyard a few months back. It was great for:
    a. Hauling dirty, big stuff
    b. Puppies
    c. Helping friends move (yeah, I am one of those nice friends...)
    d. keeping OPEC in business
    e. blowing head gaskets
    f. making me appreciate my e34 a lot more

Although the 4WD did kick ass in the winter...
