91 model 525i M50 engine auto transmission problem

I have a E34 525i with M50 engine, automatic transmission.
Lately, the auto transmission is not shifting gears properly.
Everytime I slow down or come to a complete stop, the car
will not not run even if I step on the gas. I have to shift back
to neutral then back to D before the car will move again.
I changed transmission fluid and filter but to no avail.
Sometimes, "transmission program" lights up, and car
will run starting at 2nd gear.
Can you offer some advice? Is this a mechanical or an
electronic problem?
