euro projectors are essential for and hid application.
usa ones work ok, but free form lights and hids should
    not be used together

jon k has 6000k, and its slightly bluish....i have 3000k and its
yellow and its awesome but illegal. according to teh rules
the light has to be white... so 8000k is a no-no as that is
    bluish bordering on purple already.

oems do use 4000-4300 but that is pure pure white light.
5k has a tint of blue in it =]

as far as your wife goes i'd get some hella off road
pencil beam lights and stick em near the fogs...
u can aim those things and tuen day into night =]
    they are also pretty small

Ed, this is the guy I go to for lighting mods, and a list of what he has:
    http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...ulb_types.html

He sells HIR 9011/9012 bulbs, which are adaptable in a manner similar to the 9005s. As you can see by the chart, the HIRs produce about 50% more lumens than a standard 9004 bulb. I have them in one of my cars, and it's a clear improvement without the risk of melting a housing or frying the harness. Of course the upgrade is no march for HIDs.

I paid $38 per bulb plus shipping. Stern's site is not too web-friendly, but he's a first-class vendor and an honest broker. He doesn't sell blue bulbs or any trash.

Here's another vendor: http://finemotoring.com/ ... a little better salesman than Dan, and his price is a little cheaper...I haven't dealt with him, though.

I'd suggest a LOT of caution with overwatt bulbs in E34s. I've seen a fair number of "OMG I MELTED MY WIRING HARNESS/FRIED MY LKM" threads (mostly on some of the lesser BMW forums out there) resulting from people who decided to go overwatt. If you go this route, you should seriously consider running relays and higher gauge wiring to the headlamps.

Even ignoring the wiring, if your lamp housings are plastic, those will melt, too.

HIR bulbs are supposedly fine. At least, I'm personally still holding my opinion on those.
