Does the brake fluid really need to be changed every 2 years?

Personally, I wouldn't even bother trying it without the pressure bleeder. You can pick up a bleeder for $50 or less.

It is best if you change it every two years... otherwise you will start to notice longer braking distance and brake pedal feels softer/mushy. I would say it takes about 4 years when you start to notice the problem is pretty bad. In between, it is not so noticeble... how ever... it is very evident during hot summertime/weather.

Okay I'll do it next weekend. How much brake fluid should I buy and can anyone recomend which one in particular (redline maybe)?

Make sure you get the correct brake fluid not just some stuff the saleman says "will work"

was going to build a pressure bleeder, until i saw this thing and thought i'd give it a try, costs about 5 dollars. just use the magnet to stick it above the level of the bleeder, and, THEORETICALLY, its supposed to purge the air out and keep it out even with the bleeder open. I have no complaints, it lets me do somebody's car without assistance in only the time it takes to remove the wheels and pump the brakes for a couple of times, empty, and repeat until clean. i doubt my brakes were flushed in a LOOONG time....as i managed to use up the entire large bottle on one wheel, which still wasn't clean...YMMV but i think that most normal ppl's cars might only use two of the large bottles....the bumper to bumper near my house has 1 gallon of castrol LMA for $14. good deal considering the cost of the dot 4, and considering I don't know how much more i'd need to cycle through to get things clean.

Speed bleeders work well too. I have a set of 4 and would die before I gave them up. $30 for 4 at BMP Design.

I used one to flush the brake system on my Toyota p/u (with rear anti-lock brakes) this past weekend with good results. Has anyone tried a MityVac on their E34 brake system?

I remember this from last year and thought I read that manual took more fluid and didnt get it all out of the ABS system unless the peddle was pressed all the way down...clues would be nice.
