what is the thing under the accelerator pedal for? is it simply to reduce the maximum distance that the pedal can travel or does it do something else?

It is a kickdown button.
Press it with the pedal and it selects the best lower gear for optimum passing power. If your in 4th, but should be in 2nd to pass, it will put you in 2nd.

I've got a 540i 6-Speed, and you can screw it in our out. It kinda seems like a primitive throttle limiter... But I don't know.

welcome to the site, mveale! Same on my 6-sp...although it doesn't really seem to limit the horsies under the hood!
