e30 318i question

My friend has an 318i that has been sitting all winter. When he started the car the car would idle very rough, wouldnt rev and would die. Then i come and tinker with a few things and it turns on and revs fine, but idles high. The next day it was running perfectly normal. Then the day after that it was back to the same **** with very rough idle and no reving. I disconnect the return line off of the FPR turn it on and get good pressure (didnt check the actual pressure), put the line back on, and she fired up and ran good, but would not run over 2000rpms w/o sounding like it was going to choke out. I know its a fuel problem somewhere, any ideas on what it could be?
