Default where to rent a Spring Compressor?

I tried my local pep boys but they only have one which is rented out. Anyone know where I can rent a Spring Compressor? I plan on changing my struts. I live in North NJ, thanks.

Seems to me I rented one once from the local tool rental place - the place you rent cement mixers and such.

I can't find any place that rents out spring compressors. I tried pepboys, autozone and strauss auto. They either don't rent them out or they don't sell them. Pepboys has it as a discontinued item. i can't beleive this. I called like 10 different places.

You could just make one; I've rented them from NAPA and AutoZone in the past. Napa really sticks it to you, though.

The one you want is a Macpherson strut coil spring compressor. Because of the dimensions of most, you'll need to pull the strut tower to install the compressor and pull everything else apart (not enough room in the wheel well to install the standard compressor that most of these places have).

Edit: on that JCW page, it's the $38.95 one.

Check Don Gale's page; he's got a picture of one that he made. I made a similar tool using threadstock, barstock, and a few washers/bolts.

    best, whit
