Default Super Dexron 3 in 5hp30?

HI Guys I really hope you can help me asap.

I have just had my transmission fully rebuilt and I am going to pick her up this afternoon.

I am concerned because the specialist used Super Dexron 3 instead of the Shell or Esso oil.

He said that the reason the old style Dexron 3 could not be used was because it disagreed with solenoids in the gearbox.

But this new Super Dexron 3 was reccommended by ZF and was far superior to the Shell oil.

Has anybody else come accross this?

    Ben.

dextron III is dextron III, only variable is they have a full synthetic and a mystery one. The reason you need is the shell or esso is the friction plates arent compatable with anything but the expensive stuff, they will delaminate themselves from the metal where they are bonded.

Sooooo the question "is" did they replace "all" of the frictions and was it with ZFs newer frictions made for dextron? If they dont know what your talking about or continue to tell you the fluid was only for the selinoids I dont have a clue what to tell you.

    Good Luck with this one!

Not sure about the Super Dexron, but my Mercedes Transmission is being rebuilt right now and I am thinking of using Amsoil ATF.

    Hi Jeff,

    Thanks for the response.

I believe they have replaced all of the friction material and all of the clutches.

Apparently my oil cooler which is mounted on the box ruptured and this allowed coolant into the oil which in turn destroyed all of the linings, clutches etc in the box.

    HI again,

I now have the car back but very nearly didn't bother driving it away.

My old problem is back which is only present for the first 5 minutes of use as soon as she warms up the box is silent.

It is making a cavitation type noise which has been discussed on here before when I accelerate up to 30mph from a standstill. This sounds like a boat winch or a mosquito on heat!

Do you think this is simply low oil level or air bubbles in the oil, they are convinced the oil level is correct but I have my doubts.

It is going back for a 500 mile running in service next weekend and I do trust these people as they come very highly reccomended but I am obviously concerned about the noise and their use of Dextron 111 which seems to go against widely accepted guidelines, apparently it is Dextron 111 "plus" not super. They have also stated on the invoice that they contacted ZF and the oil is superior to that approved for use in the box....

Default I would say that they are giving you a line, regarding the

dexron III, if you go to zf's website they have not approved any dexron fluids for the 540 and if you email them you'll get the same response, this issue gets tossed around here all the time and ZF has not changed their list of approved fluids every time i check its still the same and its updated by ZF about every month. As far as the noise when cold I've posted this bmw factory service bulletin numerous times also.
