I don't know about the special... but that is what Kirt always quoted me. The part is only $100... and $250 sweat labor for a couple of hours work. It's good money,
Well then I think you can handle this valve body job yourself... just take time and it helps if you have the car high up off the ground. The bolts you take off the valve body has a bigger head... and there is 13 of them.
But before you remove the bolts... take out the speed sensors first... and the wire harness... very easy work.
The fluid is up to you... I personally cannot justify $250 for 10 quarts of ATF... I just bought 12 quarts for $38 with tax! Pennzoil has confirmed with me that the multivehicle ATF they have... is compatible with what we have.
Another point to bring up is that Shell owns Pennzoil and Quaker State... and both LA2634 and Multi-Vehicle ATF is semi-synthetic... so... who made the fluid?

Another bump it since I found this online. Seems Kurt is nowhere to be found and the website goes to carpart.com.
Basically no forward gears means either it's the VB or a busted clutch drum. Aluminum parts in the pan = drum. No aluminum parts = VB.
Read another that there was no parts in the pan but the drum was in fact wasted.

Going to wait for the local pullapart.com to drag in another 540 and snag the trans for $80 bux. Besides the labor it's a no-brainer.
