I believe all BMW are clearcoated... I don't recall any without clearcoat... maybe the older ones
it is. all 95's are. there was a certain year it was implemented, don't recall what it is.
Clear on non-metallic colors started in September 1992. All metallic colors have been clear coated for a long time.Quote:

Actually BMW hads used the basecoat (color coat)/clearcoat system of painting on all colors since the mid 80's. Even the solid colors, like alpine white, are a basecoat/clearcoat. So, safe to say, any e34 we'll ever come across would 99.9% likely have clearcoated paintwork.

wow. great work guys! thank you everybody who has replied.
I stand corrected.... Thanks Bill. I guess I can correctly say that my BMW experiences have always been with cars that were cleared, even back to our black 85 535iM. But it was a euro version, so maybe that was different.... and all the others have always been metallic colors, except for the 1990 535i, which is white w/ clear coat... original paint too. The main thing the TIS says is that all colors as of that specific date are clearcoated, doesn't mean they weren't cleared before 8/93... when in doubt, check with an BMW N.A. authorized body shop. they can give you the real deal.
