E36 Service indicator lights

I have a 1992 325i, (e36), and the car drives fine except one thing... I have a light on in the dash that looks like a gear with an exlamation point in the middle (!). Does anyone know why that's on, and what does it mean?

something is pissing off the automatic tranny computer, or the check control system

if the car is driving normally there may be a small connection problem or check control system problem, if the car starts off in 3rd gear it could be lots of stuff, from dirty connection to out right bad tranny. you need to get some to read the codes in the computer with a scanner
