Been told that my evaporator needs replacement - given a choice of $1375 and $1700 total including labor (difference is aftermarket vs BMW parts).
Question - is this out of line? The indy that gave me the quote said that the book rate for labor was out of line and it would take 12 hours. Thinking they may be full of crap - but thought I would check with the experts before I say 'ok'.
So - what are the thoughts on this and what should it really cost?
Thanks

anyone?
takes a long time to replace, usually...10 hours doesn't sounds too out of place, unless there's a catch on an e34 that i don't know about
here's an evaporator, and its cost for your vehicle

A/C Evaporator with Expansion Valve
R1130-52773
In Stock $450.00 $283.38
Thanks Ryan - didn't realize that the entire dash has to come out (looked at Bentley's this morning)...
heater core, after draining and evacuating the system, its fairly easy to remove the evaporator, not that much more difficult than pulling the sword or the microfilter for example... I would go talk to another mechanic

it takes me around 3 hours to completely service a e34/32 ac system, remove compressor and drain oil, replace dryer, blow old oil from evap and condensor and replace expansion valve, make sure that you need a evap and not just a valve, i find most of the time the leak coming from the case is the valve leaking. it only takes about 10 minutes more to do a evap then just do a valve, and it only takes that long because you need to take the other side of the console apart to pull out the temp probe and stick it back in when the new evap is in place
all america wants is cold beer warm pussy and a place to take a shit with a door on it
