Consumption is down, power is down and very rich smell from exhaust. Injectors were cleaned during a head gasket change last October so I thought about changing the O2 sensor. Vehicle has 190,000 km (around 110K miles) and I don't know if it was ever changed by the PO. BMW quoted $550 for the part. - I'm still in shock.

I had an O2 sensor installed in my 89 535im about 6 months ago. It was AU$230 ish for the part and $50 to fit.

The part I got was a Bosch part the same as the dealer part except that there is not plug on the end of the wiring, so it had to be joined to the old O2 sensor wiring.

I had a local european specialist auto electrician do the job and supply the part.

Thanks Miles - the dealer isn't normally that bad on prices, but the parts guy at BMW was even laughing at the price on this one.
I don't suppose you kept the part number by any chance ?
