My replacement thermostat for my 1991 535i has no arrow on it to indicate which way is up. Is this normal? I haven't taken the old one out yet, but every place I've read about doing this talks about an arrow on the thermostat.

The thermostat is a Vernet brand thermostat.

I don't think it makes any difference which way is up, as long as the end with the temperature sensor faces the engine (willing to be corrected)

Must be simpler than an arrow to machine or something.....

The Vernet has a dot on it. Drill that dot with a 1/16 drill bit to facilitate bleeding and orient it straight up during installation. Point the body toward the engine and follow their instructions for the "O" ring or gasket, depending on your housing. Fill'er up with 50/50 mix, bleed air, and you're done!
