Torque Converter woes

Last week when moving off from an intersection, the drive failed completely and silently. Turns out the splines on the torque converter stripped (how it did this without any noise whatsoever is a mystery to me). The mainshaft splines look perfect. Even though the car has 325,000+ km on it, this still seemed like an odd part to fail. Anyone ever hear of such a thing on a 535?

Had a similar one in my 89 525i auto with M20 engine and 4HP22 tranny. It will still limp home very slowly, no traction over 3500 rpm. Had the tranny rebuilt and works like new again.
