A few days ago, I was looking at a 525 with non-elipsoid headlights. I presume they were sealed beam. I have never seen an E34 without elipsoid headlights and would be interested in getting a set of the buckets for these headlights for a project.

Anyone else seen these or have a pair to sell.

Thanks,

they're not sealed beam, but free form headlights. they use a 9006 bulb.

I've got the non-ellipsoids on my '91 535i. Mine have 9005's in the low and 9006's in the high beams, and as mentioned, they are not sealed beams. I'm planning on upgrading to the ellipsoids too, mainly for the HID-ability of the ellipsoids. For some reason the non-ellipsoids supposedly don't work well for HID upgrades.

Photo taken after getting backed into by a chevy half-ton. Oops. I believe mine are non-ellipsoid, but I'm nont light savvy. Its a 91 525im (Canada).
Does anyone out there (Bruno in particular) know why the e34.net 9005 conversion DIY states that it only works on ellipsoid units. I'd ;ove to do it , but would like to know why the sights states this.
Thanks

ouch.

the 9005 conversion states not to do the conversion on freeform headlights because of glare issues. the cap on 9006 bulbs helps to prevent glare to on coming drivers. 9005 bulbs don't have this cap.

ellipsoid headlights don't need the cap on 9006 bulbs because there is already a built in glare guard in the design of ellipsoid headlights. that's why 9005 bulbs with no caps can be used.

Oops, just noticed that I said it backwards in my post...9006 is indeed the stock lowbeam bulb.

thank you for preventing glare from my non-ellipsoids,

in my non ellipsoid lights for a while with minimal problems from oncoming drivers - otherwise I woulda been hi beamed to death. Just make sure the lights aren't aimed too high and that they are aimed to the right.

I've since changed to euro smiley's with HID's :)
