Hi:

I have a 1991 316i, E30 with an m40 engine. I have a heat problem, I just changed the thermostat, new rings, gasket, distribution, oil, coolant. The problem starts when I stop the car let's says on a stop light for a while, so the car starts to heat. Then I am on open road the car stays at low temperatures. What can it be? How can I take a look if the fan is working good?. My car doesn't have any auxiliary fan, just the engine fan.

Thanks.

Sounds like it could be the fan clutch. The "engine fan" should be blowing alot of air when your car is starting to overheat. If you then shut off the car you might notice the fan spinning for awhile. The fan clutch is likely bad if it is "freewheeling". If clutch is good then fan stops quickly if engine is hot.

Agree with Jon, replace the fan clutch.
