View Full Version : Light on?

I drove home in the rain today and as I got out the car, the dash display asked me: "Light on?"

It got me to reflecting (if not projecting) about that message vs. all the others the car displays under one condition or another.

All the others, I believe, are simple, declarative statements. Low coolant. Key in ignition. The ever popular Trans program.

So why the quizzical approach for the headlight reminder? Of course the damn headlights are still on. It's like there's a raised eyebrow implicit in the message. "Didn't you forget something? Oh yeah, and check your fly."

I'd almost prefer something a little more direct and less condescending. Something like, "Lights, dumkopf."

I like it very much, that is one of the features which helps me a lot, otherwise my wife would call me more often telling me the car does not start and "it looks like the battery is empty" ;)

I am just the humble service engineer for the car :)

There is a project going on on a specialized German forum to add more messages, Johan is member of that one

How about "Boot (Trunk) Open?", this one makes you get out of the car in the rain.

Or my favourite "Door ajar", this one happened to me recently after a bout of classic shimmy. The passenger door popped open!

Shaken but not stirred!

dont get lights on message....was an option here!
I can tell you that if you have a very good battery the parking lights(ie both front and both rear 5w lights can burn ALL DAY(from 9 till 6)) and the car will still start, allbeit crankin slightly slower than usual!

It is asking you nicely if you meant to leave them on.

instead calling you an idiot, when you actually meant to do so.

Smart polite car.

Pretty sure my lights turn off when I turn the ignition off. But the dash lights are still on and I don't get the 'lights on' dong.

LKM-L should solve the problem.

There were actually two lights-on warning kits in circulation.

The first was the polite dash message asking you if your lights were on, as shogun points out I think you just need the slightly more advanced (so advanced it couldnt figure out I had a main beam totally destroyed ) LKM module.

I suspect this is a drop in unit that will just immediately start triggering the dash warning.

The other, fitted as standard to non-obc dash cars was a completely different animal. Scares the cr*p outta you the first time you experience it - if you've got one of the low tech dashes like this:

If you left the lights on and took the key out of the ignition, you got a buzzing noise from behind the dash that sounds like a russian nuclear missile silo klaxxon going off... :D

I get the 'lights on?' warning but nothing to say I've left the boot open. Maybe if I sort the wiring fault on the light it might:) With regard to the doors, mine just puts the courtesy lights on - and if I'm too lazy or stupid to close the doors after about ten minutes it turns them off for me

During the day, I put my lights on park not to drain the battery as I was playing with the windows (read fixing). Have to put the key in position two to raise and lower them. So out goes the key when I'm done, and the message has its use.

It can be hard to notice during the day that you left the lights on. I've seen a parked car last night with the lights on, a poor Nissan owner who had no idea the car was not going to start the next morning. People are just forgetful, like me. Love the e34 and many of its details.

Don't get me wrong, I like the warning. I've come out more than once to previous cars I've owned to find a dead battery and the headlight switch on.

The warning that annoys me a little is Key in the Ignition, and only because it tends to malfunction on my car, giving false alarms. I've always assumed it's a quirk of the later-edition EWS system, early build.

I can drive down the road with my boot open and all doors open and get no warning!

I still have to solder my LKM As my right light has not gone for quite some time if I screw it up might have to upgarde to to a LKM-L from a wreaker yard.

Is this just plug and play from any year/model??

Paul in NZ what is do thoses number mean?
