1995 740i - 4.4L or 4.0?

Looking to get out of my 540 sometime soon and into a 740.

Can someone clear this up for me, please... Up to 97, they had the 4.0? then in 98 the 4.4L?

That's just what I picked up with the *very* limited research I've done on the 7 series, but I keep running across ads that say the 95 (advertised) has a 4.4L V8.

I'll be on a very limited budget, but I'm wondering what year range I should be looking at to maximize lifespan on the engine, etc.

till end 02/1996 it was a 4.0 litre engine, after that 4.4 740.
