OK, i was lucky enough to join Scott, JR, Kris, Brandon J at Dave Rs house last weekend in Chicago for the subframe bushing rally and while it was on the rack we all noticed my tank has imploded! Now I ran it dry (gasp) late this summer less than one block from the gas station-- are there any other possibilites for this? Any remedies or am I stuck with a smaller tank now or need to r/r?

Now I know why it only takes 15 gals to fill it up!

usually a mud dauber nest in the tank vent or something like that, been a while and i can't remember where it's located on that car, usually up in the right rear wheel well

First my exploding fuel pump, now a imploding tank!

I have never seen anything like that myself, is there like a dent in the tank or something? I would love to see a picture of that!

So there is a tank vent someplace other than in the gas cap? Most vehicles have pressure and vacuum relief valves in the cap. Are the valves in the top of the tank (fuel pump access hatch?).

I have seen a Citroen diesel with a collapsed tank. There was no pushing the 'dent' out of it manually. It collapsed in a way that stopped the gauge float at 1/2 tank. Not good!

my old cam used to cause a whoosh sound from vacuum when I took it off, new cap=no vacuum

Ill try and get one if I can get in on a lift again. Its pretty impressive/scary/. Ill replace the cap as a starter though. Who knows...

Here was my old tank that the genius's at the tire balancing place put in mine. You can see it was imploded and the support bars didn't even reach the tank. (They didn't have an IQ over 7)

That's so weird?! I've run my tank down to the point that the OBC didn't read any mileage left... but I'm still filling over 17 gallons or so?

Hey... here's an interesting website I came across when I was doing a search on the fuel capacity of my gas tank. The numbers for gas mileage is almost exactly what I'm getting on my 5er. I'm getting about 16.5 in the city and on my Chicago trip to the E34 gathering I got about 24.6 miles per gallon, pretty cool!

One more thing... if you want to research your car(s), then you just click on the side bar for "Select Make" versus clicking on the top selections... otherwise you have to get a user name and all that stuff. Happy Hunting!

Just noticed that my 525 has the same issue with the collapsed tank. only holds around 15 gals. So far i am gathering that i should replace the tank itself, charcoal canister, gas cap and blow out the evap lines so i am sure they are clear, any other things i should do to prevent this from happening again? also are the tanks common to all gasoline e34s?

One final question on this, where is the line that allows outside air into the vapor tank? I think this would be the line to check for a clog.
