Trying to solve a mechanical issue with the 5-spd transmission (coupled to M20 motor). Shifting into reverse is a somewhat difficult task. I have to pull the lever to the left hard to feel for the slot and then push forward. After comparing the feel in a friend's BMW, it should be a routine gear change with no effort. The leather boot is torn (from previous owner's use).

Overall, the shift lever is loose b/c all the linkage and bushings are worn. The engine and transmission have 180k miles plus.

Is this problem related to worn synchros and gearbox internals and/or the loose gear shift linkage? Would an oil change solve this issue along with a repair of the linkage?

TIA

Think you diagnosed and answered your own question - replace all the sloppy linkage bits, not forgetting the difficult coupler at the transmission shift shaft (lotsa fun getting that clip off!) and the foam insert inside it. After doing that I betcha your problem disappears.

agreed, probably the linkage/shifter issue.
