All,

The tachometer has been acting up on my '91 535i. Sometimes the needle hangs in various and random spots. It doesn't move up by itself, but it will hang, say at 3000 rpm between shifts, and not move no matter what the engine speed is. Then it will work fine for a while.

Otherwise engine runs great.

Thanks

Are any other insturments acting up? Cluster issues suck. My bro has my E24 cluster boards for repairs, considering he's a EE and builds them for a living for the military

My tacho does that when it is cold. It's almost as if there is too much friction to move the needle until it warms up a little and then its fine. It only happens on cold winter days for me.

I have taken it out of the cluster and had a look at it and there is something slightly worn or broken in the gauge itself, nothing wrong with the rest of the cluster.

I've tried a different tacho gauge installed in the rest of my normal cluster and the problem doesn't happen.

When i drive at higher speeds, like 80, 100 etc and keep it constant, my needle starts to vary. Sometimes slightly, say, if true speed is 80, it'll vary between 70 and 80... other times it'll just from 60 to 90. It takes a tap on the top of the cluster for it to go back to showing the true speed.

Tomorrow I will try to find this link I have on the speedo fix, its a busted gear I think.

but in general sounds like you have more than one cluster issue.... I cant remember off hand, but I believe your cluster is prone to the battery board issue.

My speedometer doesnt work when i first drive my car, it take about 5-10 minutes to start working, and then it stays on. The cluster has been re-soldered so i think it may be the speed sensor in the diff. The sensor is relatively cheap, so you may consider it first.

Change the capacitors and the problem is most probably gone.
