Did some work on my Highline this weekend.
My friend Take had a slow speed dremel with a very soft felt tip and we used chrome/brass/aluminium cleaner for that. Looks like new now.
You need something to handle oxidized aluminium.
Also re-did the bumpers with a re-finisher I bought in Germany. Looks like the cheap shoe shine containers with a foam brush on the top. Covers again scraped off paint with black color. Works great.
Just found a nice page which sells such products in USA.
Costs much more than the stuff I used, but seems to get the same result.

Above pic is from the link, not my one, mine looks better :)

A different thing, but along the same lines...

Has anyone got a flaky, cracked-looking film on their chrome strips on the top of the inside door trims (Where the window is)??

Takes alot to remove it, as it seems to be the original protective film

Erich, when's that highline going to be on the road again? I remember you posted pics of it and your parts car when they were "delivered", but what needs to be addressed on it?

best, whit

Car was parked for about 1 year.
Many things to do. And I want it to look next to new as much as possible.
New batteries, aircon repair, leather refinish (get special "paint" for the buffalo leather Siam grey), LAD system is leaking, engine runs rough in idle, my test unit says oxy. sensor. Bought 2 new sensors from auothausaz for each 63,- , here they cost 300/piece from Bosch.
All fluids will be replaced, new brakes (maybe upgrade), new triangle rear window sunshades, washer system (just repaired this weekend). Can only work on it with friends on the weekends when we have time. Also looking for used parts such as the sunshades (one costs about 100 $), so it takes time to get all together.
My plan is somewhere next summer, when it can roll again.
I am not in a hurry, just want to make it as good as possible.
And the final one will be a new repaint, as someone keyed it all around, but only on the lower line. Therefore I am thinking presently about a 2-color paint, where I can leave the upper oroginal Lazurblau metallic.
What do you think, would that be looking o.k., and what coloir matches to Lazur Blue?
Here one example from a German car

That's some good stuff... I tried some metal polish on my chrome windo-surround, and it made a little difference, but not enough that I wanted to do the rest of it...

That 'film' is the chrome :) I took most of it off after flaking with some Brasso.

Hey Erich, great post as always, thanks. That superior aluminium BMW uses has everyone scratching their heads, :) Dremmel to the rescue again! At least it isn't plastic or rusty chrome. I'd love to know about that stuff you got for your bumpers in Germany... can you post the details? I know it sounds lazy but I can't be stuffed taking the strips off and painting them nicely...

Qube, thanks for the warning about Brasso polishing the door panel top-strips, dangerous work indeed. I was thinking of painting them gloss black anyway- an enamel to withstand the wear I guess. The brasso took the 'chrome' top down to plastic I imagine? Just wondering the best way to prepare them before painting- 600 grit I guess plus some prepsol/deoxidant?

Or do a search for SONAX.

Have not yet washed the car yet. Maybe it washes off again ;)

But there must be something similar in your country from other suppliers.

Edit: be careful when working with a dremel. First tried one with high speed and harder felt adapter. That did not work. luckily, I tested it first on my parts car stuff.

Been rolling your question in my mind today about what would go with lazur blue. At first I didn't think 2 tone would look good, mainly because I didn't like the look of the car in the first link. But the idea has grown on me.

Saw a Dodge durango about the color of yours in traffic and there was a medium to dark gray mercedes SUV in front of it and the two colors looked good together. I think the right gray would look nice. Different and still dignified.

Also thought about the Eddie Baurer Explorers that are two tone and I think they look great. Mainly because one color is on 80% of the car and 20% is on the other. Realized the reason I didn't like the car in your link was (1) that the lighter color was on top and (2) that it looks like the car is cut in half by the paint 50%-50%. Your idea of only doing the lower part gives it the 80%-20% portions that work on the explorer and the blue is better on top.

Tried to find you blue on a bmw paint color chart and can't find it.

In grays I like the gray that is on the X5s. steel gray metallic

Question is what color and how it fits to Lazur Blue Metallic.
By the way, the BMW paint number is 294.

Plastic bumper part was done later. But here you can see how bad it looked before treatment.

Perhaps just black would be nice, it'd be kinda subtle...- esp if you add some black stripes a la Alpina style.... :) GP
