I knew it was too good to be true, i replaced the tranny on my M5, still getting this noise, i think i am just going to give up, there is no-one here that can fix this car, italians know nothing about bmw's especially m cars. I already have a few thousand into it since i bought it, i dont know what else to do, it sits at the mechanics more than i can drive it. Anyone else have any advice or words of encouragement, otherwise i may have to sell it or junk it, I hate to do it, but I have no idea what the noise is, its seems to be getting worse, an no-one knows how to fix it.:( :( :(

Did you inspect the clutch? It may be the throw-out bearing or the pressure plate.

What part of Italy are you in? If northern, and the car drives, Munich is very close. Have someone look at it who built it. Even Austria will have a good BMW mechanic.

I will also be in northern Italy in July. If you need, and are close, I can take a look at it for you.

This type of problem shouldn't bee that hard to diagnose. You just need to find a competent mechanic.

I'm in sicily, im not sure what the deal is, clutch was replaced, tranny replaced, everything was inspected closely, im leaning towards some problem internally in the tranny that could be wrong with both transmissions the old one and new one, maybe the shifter forks, camshaft i dont know, im still lost, sound definitely coming from the tranny/shifter area?????????????????..............

can you describe the sound? and when it makes itself heard?

Its kinda like a grinding whirring noise when throttle is applied in neutral with clutch in our out it still makes noise, also can be heard in first or second gear sometimes third, at lower speeds when the engine heats up, disappears when no throttle is given, u rev the engine you hear the noise, and vibrations coming from the shifter/tranny area inside near the front floorboards, i am totally lost

It sounds like some bearing has gone south... I would check every bearings from rear seal all the way to clutch unti.
Good luck...!

I have a similar problem with my 530i manual (the M30 engined car). There is a whirring sort of noise when the car is cold which diminishes as the engine warms up. It is far more noticeable in lower gears - a sort of rrrr rrrr sound.
It is engine related since it is there whether the clutch is in or out.
One mechanic suggested it could be a worn spigot bearing. In case my American friends have a different name for this it is the bearing that sits in the end of the crankshaft and supports the input shaft which goes into the gearbox.

Hope that helps! I would be grateful for anyone's views. My gearbox is due for an inspection/overhaul but the transmission specialist couldnt do the job because he knew that if he took the exhaust off to take the 'box out, it would fall apart on him! Once I have a new exhaust in place I can think about going back - he will check this bearing and the clutch at the same time.

Sometimes feels like I need a second job to support this old girl...

The early model Getrag gearboxes made a rattle noise which sounded like a bearing was shot.
I had one in my 84 323i and every expert I spoke to had listened to it and said it was typical of that gearbox. I refused to believe them but found it to be true. Even the guy who bought the car from me replaced the bearings etc and it still rattled.

Have you checked all your mounts ? Engine & Transmission ? When the transmission was done- what clutch went into it ? What does it have for a flywheel ? Given you are not running standard M5 pieces its tough to say what it is. Have you had someone rev the engine while the car is on the hoist ? If you are feeling it inside the car - using that methodology it should be possible to narrow down the results.

Are you sure the new trans was actually put in ? Did you see old parts ??

Sounds like the clutch release bearing. When you changed the clutch, did you get a kit? Or just the plate?

My clutch was making a similar noise for a year (I thought it only happened cuz I over geared, and I thought that's how 'pinging' sounded) ... when my release bearing finally gave... it made a grinding noise whenever I stepped on the clutch pedal... and at low rpms. Was gonna just change the plate.. but shop said that the kit was cheaper in the long run, and if something else gave, I'd regret not changing the kit.

Got the kit... noise went away... car pulls a lot better from a stand-still... and fuel consumption went down.

Yes, i have both transmissions the old and the new one installed, all mounts are new, motor and tranny, its a getrag 260, clutch from this new tranny went in, all the parts are good, there could be no getrag 280 replacement found, i looked everywhere, these cars are not popular over here, i have never seen one not owned by another american here. mine is one of the three on base here. My friend mentioned the crankshaft that comes into the tranny has bearings on it and the noise could be coming from there, i just want to get it running good, so when i bring it back to the u.s. i will have many places that i can find replacement parts, and rebuilt trannys, unlike here.
