Having some squealing under the hood (like belt slippage) when revving to 2000+ RPM in any gear. Doing some searches on the forum...

Can we narrow down which this might be? It does 'go away' after a while. Going to visit the mechanic on Saturday.... or shall I not wait?

open the hood and check if the belts are loose!

I would... but being a neophyte... don't know what's loose unless it's dangling off the ground and wrapping around the tires ;)

pulley and pull or push up/down the belt to feel how much give it has.

If it is more than an inch, it is too loose.

For reference: According to the manual...

Deflection should be about 6mm if the center distance from pullys is 180-280mm. Deflection should be about 13mm if centerline is 300-400mm.

What do you mean? On my vehicle? Haven't checked yet. Going to do so tomorrow after work. Also going to see if it isn't clutch slippage.

Squealing like nuts today. On the way to the mechanic, the belt snapped. At first I couldn't figure out what the noise was, then it dawned on me when the ABS, CEL, PBRAKE, BATT light lit up. Pulled over, then coolant leaked from the overflow :| Oh well.

I wonder how much this will be? :)

Yikes Qube,

Since you have visited this forum for some time, you should be "brave" enough to do the normal checks in the car. Sorry to hear that the belt snapped at the eleventh hour. Things like this do happen, so it depends on what else breaks in there.

Keep us updated on what repair it has and what actually break besides the belt!. This is something to teach us to R&R sooner rather than delaying ...

PS: What speed were you doing when the belt snapped ?.

Yep. I'm starting to do checks and whatnot. I have the Haynes manual and am going through it slowly.

In terms of speed... I would guess around 50-60 KPH in 3rd gear. On a side note, now I know what the sound of a belt snapping sounds like! :)
